This Month I Loved: Green Walks, Ice Lollies, and Summer Starts

June’s lovely little things – nature, snacks, sunshine, and stories.

Right. Let’s talk about June. That glorious month when everything starts smelling like BBQ smoke, your thighs fuse together permanently, and every conversation begins with “Isn’t it HOT?”

I call June the Tease of Summer. It hints at golden evenings and rose-tinted mornings, then whacks you round the back of the knees with 27-degree heat and a broken fan. Still, I’m not complaining. Much. This month had some little gems I genuinely loved, and no, I don’t just mean sitting on cold bathroom tiles in my pants.

Here’s what’s been making me smile this June.

🍃 Green Walks: Nature’s Free Therapy (And Cardio, Apparently)

This month, I became that person. The one who says things like “I just needed to clear my head” and owns multiple reusable water bottles. I’ve been walking. Not a lot, but enough. Through the woods. Past ducks. Up hills. Down hills. Past other walkers who all seem to own a cockapoo and dress like they’re halfway through filming a documentary for the BBC.

But seriously, I’ve found myself craving trees. It’s like my brain’s gone all outdoorsy. The sun hits the leaves just right, the birds do their daily Twitter concert, and suddenly I forget I haven’t hoovered the stairs since April. Nature just slaps the stress out of you. In the nicest possible way.

🍦 Ice Lollies: The Only Thing I’m Committed To Right Now

There is no dignity in eating a Calippo. None. I’m usually halfway through one before realising I look like a dehydrated toddler licking condensation off a carrot. But I don’t care. Ice lollies are life right now.

I’ve tried them all. Fruit pastille ones (elite). Those jazzy tropical smoothie ones from Lidl that taste vaguely of mango and regret. I even had a go at making my own, which resulted in a tray of frozen squash and one cracked molar.

Also, why is the Mini Milk still 25p in my head but actually £1.50? We need answers.

🌞 Summer Starts: That First Proper Warm Day Vibe

You know the one. You wake up and everything smells like hope and SPF 30. You wear the sundress that’s been hibernating since last September. The garden suddenly looks Instagram-worthy even though you’ve done absolutely nothing to it except panic-water the herbs.

It’s all so… potentially productive. You think: “Maybe I’ll take up paddleboarding.” Or: “I could totally grow tomatoes.” Then you remember you killed a cactus and spend the afternoon eating crisps in the shade. Perfect.

This year, I’m calling it early, June is the new July. I’ve already had my sandals out, and I’ve got shoulder freckles. It’s happening.

📚 Books, Beauty and the Bits In Between

Book of the month? “Funny You Should Ask” by Elissa Sussman. Total beach-read energy without the sand in your crevices. Sharp, romantic, funny. My kind of escapism. Also loved: rereading old Nora Ephron because I, too feel bad about my neck and love a deli counter.

Beauty wise, I’m still suspicious of anything that costs more than a round of drinks and claims to “plump” anything other than your overdraft. I don’t fall for the hype, mostly because I’ve fallen for it before and ended up looking like a shiny aubergine. That said, if there are any miracle creams out there that genuinely work, I’m open to being persuaded. Especially if they come with biscuits.

Other obsessions: cooling mists, ankle socks, and trying to find a sunhat that doesn’t make me look like I’m in Witness Protection.

💬 Real Life Bits (because I’m not a Pinterest board)

This month also included the following highlights:

  • Tripping over the garden hose and pretending I meant to do a “forward flow stretch.”
  • Getting stuck in a deckchair. Again.
  • Making salad that nobody ate, including me.
  • Doing a summer wardrobe clearout and still having nothing to wear, but at least now I know exactly which dress haunts me every June. (It’s the one that clings in all the wrong places and smells slightly of holiday panic.)
