Hey there, lovely readers!
As some of you may know from my intro page, “My Life and Style Over 40,” I’m a straight-talking, sometimes messy, definitely-over-40 woman who loves a good chat (and a classic Mini!). But what you might not know is that there was a whole internal debate before I ever hit “publish” on that first post. Should I craft a more impersonal, SEO-optimised persona to attract readers? Should I hold back a bit, sand down the rough edges, and write in a more generic style, of which I have been guilty of in the past and quite frankly those posts really just don’t feel like me!?
Ultimately, the answer should be a resounding “no” in my humble opinion. So if you’re thinking of starting a blog or you’ve already got one, or even if you just follow me and have noticed changes to the way I write, this might help you get me a bit more.
Here’s why I choose authenticity over SEO tactics, and why I believe you should too, no matter what your blog is about.
The Power of Vulnerability
Let’s face it, the blogosphere is saturated. There’s a blog (or ten) for every niche imaginable. So, how do you stand out? By being you. By sharing your unique voice, experiences, and even vulnerabilities. People don’t connect with robots; they connect with real people, with stories that resonate on a deeper level.
Being vulnerable doesn’t mean airing all your dirty laundry online. It’s about being honest about your struggles, your joys, your passions – the messy bits that make you, you. It’s about creating a space where readers feel seen and understood. And guess what? That vulnerability is magnetic. It fosters a sense of community and trust, drawing readers in and keeping them coming back for more.
The SEO Balancing Act
Now, I’m not saying SEO is completely unimportant. After all, you want people to find your blog, right? But here’s the thing: When you prioritise SEO tactics over your own voice, your writing can become robotic, keyword-stuffed, and frankly, dull. People can sniff out inauthenticity a mile away. And, yes I have written some posts like this. The reality is it’s the only way I can keep my blog being seen.
The good news is, you can find a balance. There are ways to optimise your content for search engines without sacrificing your unique style. Focus on creating high-quality, informative content that naturally incorporates relevant keywords. Think of SEO as a tool to help people discover your authentic voice, not a cage to confine it.
The “Marmite Effect”
Here’s the truth: Not everyone will love your writing style. Just like Marmite, some people will find it a delightful, savoury treat, while others will wrinkle their noses and reach for the jam. That’s okay! You can’t please everyone, and life’s too short to try.
Embrace the “Marmite effect.” Find your tribe, your people who connect with your voice and appreciate your honesty. Building a genuine connection with a smaller, engaged audience is far more valuable than chasing an audience you don’t truly resonate with.
So, what are your thoughts?
Do you write in your authentic voice, or do you find yourself holding back? What are your experiences with vulnerability in blogging? Have you found a balance between honesty and SEO? Let’s chat over at Mylifeandstyleover40 on Facebook! I’d love to hear from you and continue this conversation about vulnerability and the power of authentic writing.
Take care, stay safe.
