Wardrobe must-haves: A simple guide

Building a functional and stylish wardrobe doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With a few key pieces, you can create a variety of looks for any occasion.

I am one of those people who have a wardrobe crammed full of unworn, “just not my style” items, and despite having a good clear out every so often I never really minimise the amount of clothes, shoes and accessories I have. There always seems to be more than I thought.

I often find myself buying items because they were a bargain at the charity shop or on Vinted. I really do need to stop midnight scrolling! I’m usually quite savvy with money, but I have found myself in a state where I can’t quite remember buying something. Obviously I have as its there cluttering up my space but I’m menopausal so I’m putting my lapse in memory down to that!

I have decided that I need to go through my wardrobe and have a proper look at what I have and build a wardrobe based on quality over quantity. I think a set of good long lasting basics is a good start and to save outfits becoming boring I need to accessorise and look at ways to style things differently. Pinterest is always good for inspiration, and this is where I fail miserably when it comes to outfit styling. I play it safe far too much, and have become to ‘classic’, possibly old fashioned in how I wear clothes. I need to think a bit outside the styling box.

So to help I enlisted the help of Google and Pinterest. There is a plethora of advice on the internet and at times it can be overwhelming, so you need to be able to sift through it and still make sense. So I’ve done all the hard work for you and here is my little guide on wardrobe must-haves:

  • White button-down shirt: A white button-down shirt is another essential piece for any wardrobe. It can be dressed up with a skirt or trousers for work or a special occasion, or dressed down with jeans or chinos for a more casual look.
  • Neutral-colored vest (or tank) top: A neutral-colored vest top is a great layering piece or can be worn on its own in warmer weather. It’s also a good option for dressing up or down, depending on your accessories.
  • Black blouse: A black (or navy) blouse is a versatile piece that can be worn for any occasion. It’s perfect for dressing up with a skirt or trousers for work or a special occasion, or dressed down with jeans or chinos for a more casual look.

Conclusion

Building a functional and stylish wardrobe doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With a few key pieces, you can create a variety of looks for any occasion. By following the tips above, you, like me, can start building your ideal wardrobe today. Just remember to use accessories and ‘dress or style’ your outfit rather than just wearing it, it really does make all the difference. Much of which I have mentioned is ‘common sense’ and can be found all over the internet, but there is one golden rule to remember and that is to wear colours that suit you and that you enjoy, this way your new found perfect wardrobe will never become boring. If black is not your best neutral then choose navy or grey. Go with what suits you – don’t think you have to tick the box to fit!

I know I’m going to try to find my perfect wardrobe, but I do know there are areas I need to work on in tandem with these hints and tips. Finding my personal style is one of them of which I have written another post on, you can find it here: Finding Your Personal Style

I hope this has been useful, here’s to getting the best YOU xx

Take care, stay safe.
